At Ashmount, English sits at the heart of our curriculum – it is through language, story and text that children learn to form concepts, connect ideas and express themselves. Through literacy, in all its forms, children learn to both make sense of the world and shape their place within it.

At Ashmount Primary School we believe that the teaching of phonics is vital in order for children to become competent readers and writers. We strive to ensure that all children become fluent readers before the end of Year 2. We believe this is achievable through a combination of strong, high quality, discrete phonics teaching combined with a whole language approach that promotes a ‘Reading for Pleasure’ culture.

At Ashmount Primary School we strongly believe that all children can become confident, creative and successful mathematicians. We are passionate about maths and want our children to feel that way too!

At Ashmount, we really value the arts and place a strong emphasis on developing children’s creativity and skills in the areas of music, art and design and design and technology.

At Ashmount me take a holistic view of how all are children develop personally, socially, healthily and through the development of their skills to become good citizens. This follows the London Borough of Islington’s agreed syllabus and covers an array of topic in an age appropriate way.

Our science curriculum allows children to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement, curiosity and interest about natural phenomena.
